The objectives of this study are to evaluate the effects of (1) a potential interaction between supplement crude protein (CP) concentration and differing cow genotypes on milk production, (2) differing cow genotypes on milk production, and (3) decreasing the supplement CP concentration on milk production and N excretion during the main grazing season within a spring-calving herd. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement experiment, with 2 feeding strategies [14%; n = 30 (lower CP; LCP) and 18%; n = 28 (higher CP; HCP) CP concentrate supplements] offered at varying levels according to pasture availability and days in milk (DIM) was conducted over the main grazing season from April 3 to September 3, 2019, at University College Dublin Lyons Farm. Cows were also grouped into 2 genotype groups: lower milk genotype; n = 30 [LM; milk kg predicted transmitting ability (PTA): 45 ± 68.6 (mean ± SD); fat kg PTA: 10 ± 4.9; and protein kg PTA: 7 ± 2.3] and higher milk genotype; n = 28 [HM; milk kg PTA: 203 ± 55.0; fat kg PTA: 13 ± 3.8; and protein kg PTA: 10 ± 2.4]. A total of 46 multiparous and 12 primiparous (total; 58) Holstein Friesian dairy cows were blocked on parity and balanced on DIM, body condition score, and Economic Breeding Index. Cows were offered a basal diet of grazed perennial ryegrass pasture. The N partitioning study took place from August 25 to 30, 2019 (187 ± 15.2 DIM). No interactions were observed for any milk production or milk composition parameter. No effect of supplement CP concentration was observed for any total accumulated milk production, daily milk production, or milk composition parameter measured. The HM cows had increased daily milk yield (+1.9 kg), fat and protein (+0.15 kg), and energy-corrected milk (+1.7 kg), compared with the LM cows. Furthermore, HM cows had decreased milk protein concentration (-0.1%) compared with LM cows. For the N partitioning study, cows offered LCP had increased pasture dry matter intake (PDMI; +0.9 kg/d), dietary N intake (+0.022 kg/d), feces N excretion (+0.016 kg/d), and decreased N partitioning to milk (-2%), and N utilization efficiency (-2.3%). In conclusion, offering cows LCP had no negative influence on milk production or milk composition over the main grazing season where high pasture quality was maintained. However, any potential negative effects of offering LCP on milk production may have been offset by the increased PDMI. Furthermore, offering cows LCP decreased N utilization efficiency due to the higher PDMI and feed N intake associated with cows on this treatment in our study.

Zero-grazing (ZG; the mechanical harvesting and feeding of fresh grass) is increasingly used in grass-based milk production systems alongside conventional grazing. It allows farmers to supply fresh grass from land parcels that are outside of the main grazing block during seasonal shortages and periods when climatic conditions limit animal grazing opportunities. The objective of this study was to establish an understanding of current ZG practices on Irish dairy farms, to capture farmer perceptions on the implementation of this management practice, and to identify farmer knowledge requirements on ZG. An online survey was distributed and completed by 130 dairy farmers who use or have used ZG. Zero-grazing was used alongside conventional grazing by 92% of respondents. These farms were particularly fragmented, with between 1 and 14 separate land blocks. Respondents felt ZG helped them overcome fragmentation, increase grass use, and extend grass feeding in spring and autumn. However, extra cost and time input associated with ZG were recognized as key challenges. The majority of respondents rated current technical information available on ZG in the Republic of Ireland as "poor" or "very poor," and knowledge deficits were identified in the areas of cost analysis, grass management and productivity, cow productivity, cow health and nutrition, and soil fertility.

High levels of milk production coupled with low feed intake cause negative energy balance in early lactation, especially in the first month postpartum (PP). Therefore, specific nutritional management at this time may improve nutritional and metabolic status with the possibility of contrasting genotypes responding differently. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the effects of nutritional management strategies and dairy cow genotype on milk production, metabolic status, and some fertility parameters during early lactation in a pasture-based system. Sixty Holstein Friesian cows were blocked on parity and genotype [low-fertility high-milk (LFHM) and high-fertility low-milk (HFLM)] and were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, in a randomized complete block design based on calving date, previous 305-d milk yield, and precalving body condition score (BCS). The nutritional management treatments were: (1) ad libitum access to fresh pasture plus an allowance of 3 kg of concentrates per day (CTR, n = 30); and (2) ab libitum access to a tailored total mixed ration (TMR, n = 30). These diets were offered for the first 30 d PP. Following the first 30 d PP, cows fed TMR joined the CTR treatment and were managed similarly until 100 d PP. Blood samples were taken at d 7, 14, 21, and 28 PP to determine metabolic status. Milk samples for composition analysis were collected weekly and BCS assessed every 2 wk. Genotype had a significant effect on milk output, whereas LFHM had increased fat (+0.28 kg/d) and fat-plus-protein (+0.17 kg/d) yield in the first 30 d PP compared with HFLM cows. The LFHM group also exhibited higher protein and lactose yields over the first 100 d PP. Nutritional management did create significant differences in milk composition in the first 30 d: TMR cows had lower protein, milk urea nitrogen, and casein concentration and higher lactose concentration than CTR cows. Over the first 100 d PP, TMR cows had higher fat-plus-protein and lactose yields. Feeding TMR reduced concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (-0.12 mmol/L) and ß-hydroxybutyric acid (-0.10 mmol/L) compared with the CTR group. Cows fed TMR had smaller BCS losses from calving to 60 d PP. There was no effect of any treatment on uterine recovery. Cows in the LFHM group demonstrated greater milk production in the first 30 and 100 d in milk. These results demonstrate that feeding cows a TMR for the first month of lactation has positive effects on milk output, metabolic status, and BCS profile.

A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to estimate the effect of herb species on milk production and urinary nitrogen (UN) excretion from grazing dairy cows. Grazing swards consisting of herb species grown with either a grass species or a grass and legume (multispecies swards) were compared with non-herb-containing swards consisting of a grass species grown as a monoculture or grass-legume swards (simple swards). A literature search was completed using the online databases CAB Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, using the search strategy "dairy cow", "herb OR forb OR phorb", and "grazing". Milk production data, variance, and sample size were required for eligibility. In all, 116 studies were identified. Following eligibility screening, 11 papers from 6 journals, published between 2006 and 2018, were available for analysis. Studies were from New Zealand (N = 7), Australia (N = 3), and the United States (N = 1). The population was either Holstein Friesian or Holstein Friesian × Jersey dairy cows, with a range in mean daily milk yield (MY) from 12.1 kg to 34.7 kg (mean = 18.6 kg). A total of 25 comparisons were used for milk production analysis, with 324 and 284 cows included in multispecies and simple sward groups respectively. Data analysis was conducted in R using a random effects, robust variance estimation model (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria). Heterogeneity was reported using the I2 statistic. Milk production was significantly increased. Analysis of MY resulted in a weighted mean difference (WMD) of +1.20 kg/d (95% CI = 0.90, 1.49; I2 = 4%). Fat and protein kg were also significantly increased (WMD +0.06 kg/d; CI = 0.01, 0.11). Urinary nitrogen excretion was estimated from milk urea nitrogen when reported (n = 6). A WMD of -28.1 g of N/d (95% CI = -81.1, 24.9) was generated, with heterogeneity high among studies (I2 = 75%). This meta-analysis shows the potential benefits of multispecies swards. Although we saw no significant difference in UN excretion, an increase in milk production was found.

Grass-based production systems use concentrate supplementation primarily when pasture quality and availability have declined. Barley is a common concentrate ingredient; however, oat grain grows well in Ireland, is a source of lipids and fiber, and may provide an alternative to barley. The antioxidant α-tocopherol (α-TOC) plays a role in cell membrane structure, and it has the potential to improve tight junction structures of the mammary gland that deteriorate in late lactation. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of cereal type and α-TOC level on milk yield, milk composition, rumen fermentation, and N excretion in late-lactation dairy cows at pasture and when housed indoors on grass silage. Forty-eight Holstein Friesian dairy cows were blocked on days in milk (+185 d in milk) and balanced for parity, pre-experimental milk yield, milk composition, and body condition score and assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design (n = 12). The dietary treatments were control (C) base diet; base diet + barley-based concentrate + low α-TOC (350 IU/kg) (B); base diet + oat-based concentrate + low α-TOC (350 IU/kg) (O); and base diet + oat-based concentrate + high α-TOC (1,050 IU/kg) (O+T). Following a 14-d acclimation period, diets were offered for a 49-d experimental period at pasture (P1) and a 21-d experimental period indoors (P2). The base diet was grazed grass in P1 and grass silage in P2. In P2, cows on C also received 2.65 kg (dry matter) of a standard concentrate. In P1, supplementation increased milk and milk solids yield (B: 20.7 kg/d, 1.74 kg/d; O: 20.6 kg/d, 1.81 kg/d; O+T: 20.5 kg/d, 1.77 kg/d, respectively) compared with C (17.8 kg/d, 1.60 kg/d). Cows offered B had a lower milk fat (4.60%) concentration than C (5.00%) and O (4.90%). In P2, cereal type and α-TOC level did not alter milk production. In conclusion, concentrate supplementation increased milk and milk solids yield and cows offered O had a higher milk fat concentration than cows offered B. Increasing the level of α-TOC had no major effect on production parameters measured in P1 or in P2.

In Ireland, milk is primarily produced using a spring-calving grass-based system, with the use of concentrate supplementation mainly when pasture availability and quality are reduced. In the autumn, when cows are in late lactation, reduced pasture productivity results in reduced milk yield and altered milk composition. Nitrogen utilization efficiency also reduces as lactation progresses. Concentrate supplementation has been found to increase milk production and reduce nitrogen (N) excretion, as high-N grass is usually replaced by a lower-N supplement; however, there is a paucity of information with regard to the optimum type of supplementation in late lactation. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate the effect of different concentrate supplementation types, based on barley or maize, on milk production, dry matter intake (DMI), rumen fermentation, and N excretion in late-lactation, spring-calving, grazing dairy cows. Thirty-six Holstein Friesian dairy cows were blocked on days in milk (185 DIM) and balanced for parity, pre-experimental milk yield, milk composition, and body condition score. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design (n = 12). The 3 treatments consisted of a perennial ryegrass-based pasture-only (PO) treatment and pasture plus either of 2 supplementary concentrates, based on barley (PB) or maize (PM). The diets were fed for a 14-d acclimatization period and then for a further 63-d experimental period. Cows offered PO had a lower daily milk yield (15.1 kg) than PB (18.2 kg) or PM (16.8 kg). Similarly, PO had lower daily milk solids yield (1.46 kg) than PB or PM (1.68 and 1.53 kg, respectively). Cows offered PB had a greater milk yield and higher fat and protein yields than those offered PM. Offering PB increased total DMI (19.5 kg) compared with PO (17.7 kg), and milk response to concentrates was also greater for PB compared with PM (1.21 vs. 0.71 kg of milk per kg of concentrate). Cows offered PB had increased N in milk compared with PO. In conclusion, concentrate supplementation based on barley or maize resulted in increased milk and milk solids yield compared with offering PO. Cows offered barley had a greater response to concentrates and increased milk and milk solids yield in comparison to maize and showed increased N partitioning in milk compared with PO. A barley-based concentrate increased total DMI compared with PO.

Interest is growing in the use of by-products as economical sources of nutrients that complement grazed grass, particularly at times when grass supply is insufficient to meet the nutritional demands of lactating dairy cattle. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of the amount of by-product inclusion and concentrate feeding rate on pasture dry matter intake, milk production and composition, and N excretion from spring-calving cows grazing summer pasture during mid-late lactation. Forty-eight Holstein Friesian dairy cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Cows were grazed in one group on a perennial ryegrass-based sward, with pelleted concentrates offered twice daily during milking over a 63-d experimental period. The dietary treatments were 3 kg of concentrate containing 35% by-products; 6 kg of concentrate containing 35% by-products; 3 kg of concentrate containing 95% by-products; and 6 kg of concentrate containing 95% by-products on a fresh matter basis. The by-products used were soybean hulls, palm kernel expeller, and maize dried distillers grains with solubles, included in equal proportions on a dry matter basis. Pasture dry matter intake (14.5 kg/d) was not affected by the amount of by-product inclusion or feeding rate. By-product inclusion had no effect on milk yield (27.1 kg/d) or milk solids (MS) yield (2.0 kg/d). Cows offered 6 kg of concentrate had a greater milk (+1.6 kg/d) and MS (+0.13 kg/d) yield, consumed more N (+0.08 kg/d), and excreted a lower proportion of N in the milk (0.25 vs. 0.27) and feces (0.39 vs. 0.41) and a higher proportion in the urine (0.39 vs. 0.32) compared with cows offered 3 kg of by-product-based concentrate. In conclusion, by-products can be included at up to 95% of the concentrate fed to cows grazing pasture without affecting pasture dry matter intake, milk production or composition, or N excretion. Cows offered 6 kg of concentrates produced more milk and MS than cows offered 3 kg but had higher urinary N excretion. Economics of this yield response will depend on milk and concentrate prices.

A two-year (2015 and 2016) grazing study was established to compare ewe and lamb performance when grazed on a perennial ryegrass only sward compared to more diverse sward types. In that study four sward types were investigated: a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) only sward receiving 163 kg nitrogen per hectare per year (N/ha/yr) (PRG); a perennial ryegrass and white clover (Trifolium repens) sward receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (PRGWC); a six species sward (two grasses (perennial ryegrass and timothy (Phleum pratense)), two legumes (white and red clover (Trifolium pratense)) and two herbs (ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and chicory (Cichorium intybus)) receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (6S); and a nine species sward containing cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), greater birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in addition to the six species listed above, receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (9S). Each sward type was managed as a separate farmlet and stocked with 30 twin-rearing ewes at a stocking rate of 12.5 ewes/ha under rotational grazing management from turnout post-lambing until housing. Lamb live weight was recorded fortnightly and lambs were drafted for slaughter at 45 kg. Ewe live weight and body condition score (BCS) were recorded on five occasions annually. Lamb faecal egg count (FEC) was recorded fortnightly and lambs were treated with anthelmintics when mean lamb FEC per sward type was above 400 eggs per gram. Ewes grazing the 6S and 9S swards had heavier (P < 0.01) live weights and BCS throughout the study than the ewes grazing the PRG sward. Lambs grazing the 6S sward were heavier than lambs grazing all other sward types of 14 weeks old (P < 0.05). Lambs grazing the PRG sward required more days to reach slaughter weight than lambs grazing all other sward types (P < 0.001). Lambs grazing the 6S and 9S swards required fewer anthelmintic treatments than lambs grazing the PRG or PRGWC swards. In conclusion, grazing multispecies swards improved ewe and lamb performance and reduced the requirement for chemical anthelmintics.

To address the lack of a truly portable, universal reference mapping population for perennial ryegrass, we have been developing a recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population of perennial ryegrass derived via single seed descent from a well-characterized F2 mapping population based on genetically distinct inbred parents in which the natural self-incompatibility (SI) system of perennial ryegrass has been overcome. We examined whether it is possible to create a genotyping by sequencing (GBS) based genetic linkage map in a small population of the F6 generation of this population. We used 41 F6 genotypes for GBS with PstI/MspI-based libraries. We successfully developed a genetic linkage map comprising 6074 SNP markers, placing a further 22080 presence and absence variation (PAV) markers on the map. We examined the resulting genetic map for general and RIL specific features. Overall segregation distortion levels were similar to those experienced in the F2 generation, but segregation distortion was reduced on linkage group 6 and increased on linkage group 7. Residual heterozygosity in the F6 generation was observed at a level of 5.4%. There was a high proportion of chromosomes (30%) exhibiting the intact haplotype of the original inbred parents of the F1 genotype from which the population is derived, pointing to a tendency for chromosomes to assort without recombining. This could affect the applicability of these lines and might make them more suitable for situations where repressed recombination is an advantage. Inter- and intra-chromosomal linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis suggested that the map order was robust. We conclude that this RIL population, and subsequent F7 and F8 generations will be useful for genetic analysis and phenotyping of agronomic and biological important traits in perennial ryegrass.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of replacing barley and soybean meal with increasing levels of by-products on production, digestive, and metabolic parameters in early-mid lactation dairy cows offered perennial ryegrass-based pasture. Forty-eight (32 multiparous and 16 primiparous) dairy cows that were 64 ± 24 d in milk were assigned to 1 of 4 pasture-based dietary treatments (n = 12) in a randomized block design experiment that ran for 70 d. Treatments consisted of a perennial ryegrass-based pasture and 1 of 4 supplementary concentrates: BP35, BP55, BP75, and BP95 containing 35, 55, 75, and 95% by-products, respectively, in the concentrate on a dry matter basis. The by-products used were soyhulls, dried distillers grains, and palm kernel extract in equal proportions. Barley and soybean meal were replaced as by-product inclusion level increased. In this study, intakes of pasture dry matter (15.7 kg) and total dry matter (21.1 kg) were not affected by treatment. Similarly, milk production parameters (milk yield, milk composition, somatic cell count, and urea) were not different between treatments. Unsaturated fatty acids were lower in the milk of cows offered BP35 and BP55 compared with those offered BP75 and BP95. Concentrations of ß-hydroxybutyrate, nonesterified fatty acids, and other blood metabolites were within normal range and did not differ between treatments, and cow body condition score and body weight were also not different. Equally, N was unaffected by diet. Blood urea N was lower in the BP75 group compared with BP35. This study demonstrated that barley and soybean meal can be replaced with soyhulls, dried distillers grains, and palm kernel extract without affecting milk production, digestive, or metabolic parameters in dairy cows offered a pasture-based diet.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pregrazing pasture herbage mass (HM) on CH4 emissions, ruminal fermentation, and ADG of grazing beef heifers at 2 stages of the grazing season. Thirty Limousin cross heifers were allocated to 1 of 2 target pregrazing HM treatments [a low HM (LHM) or high HM (HHM) treatment] for 126 d in a randomized block design experiment. Pasture herbage and heifer rumen fluid samples were collected, and enteric CH4 emissions were determined using an SF6 tracer technique during two 5-d measurement periods [MP; MP 1 (25 to 29 May) and MP 2 (6 to 10 September)]. Both DMI and GE intake (GEI) were measured during MP 2, and ADG of the heifers was measured every 14 d throughout the 126-d grazing period. Mean HM for the LHM and HHM treatments were 1,300 and 2,000 kg DM/ha, respectively, during MP 1 and 2,800 and 3,200 kg DM/ha, respectively, during MP 2. The CP concentration of the offered herbage was greater (P < 0.01) for the LHM treatment during MP 1 and tended (P < 0.1) to be greater for the LHM herbage during MP 2. No difference (P > 0.10) in the NDF concentration of the herbage was found between the HM treatments during MP 1 or 2. There was no effect (P > 0.10) of HM treatment on total CH4 emissions (g/d) for either MP [mean value across HM treatments of 121 (SED 5.4) g/d during MP 1 and 132 (8.8) g/d during MP 2], but CH4 emissions (g) per kilogram of ADG were reduced (P < 0.05) from heifers fed the LHM treatment during MP 1 and 2 [mean values for LHM and HHM of 135 and 163 (SED 9.5) g/kg, respectively, during MP 1 and corresponding values of 150 and 194 (9.9) g/kg during MP 2]. Heifers fed the LHM treatment had greater (P < 0.001) ADG throughout the grazing period [mean value across the 126-d grazing period of 0.88 (SEM 0.032) kg/d] than those fed the HHM treatment [corresponding value of 0.73 (0.034)]. For MP 2, CH4 emissions per kilogram of DMI (g CH4/kg DMI) and per megajoule of GEI (MJ CH4/MJ GEI) tended (P ≤ 0.08) to be less for heifers fed the LHM [19.3 (0.08) g/kg and 0.056 (0.0020) MJ/MJ, respectively] than for the HHM (21.1 g/kg and 0.061 MJ/MJ) treatment, and there were no differences (P > 0.10) in DMI or GEI of the heifers between the HM treatments. The results of this study suggest that offering a low pregrazing HM sward will reduce enteric CH4 emissions relative to ADG throughout the grazing season because of increased ADG.

Previous studies have indicated that reducing dietary CP may improve N utilization and effectively diminish manure ammonia emissions; however, the response of manure odor emissions to such dietary modifications has been inconsistent. The objective of the current experiment was to induce decreased lactobacilli (DL) numbers in the distal gastrointestinal tract (dGIT; cecum + colon) of finishing pigs offered both high- and low-CP diets through consumption of chitosan, and examine the influence of this model on manure ammonia and odor emissions when compared with a positive control diet. It was hypothesized that an DL population would be accompanied by an increase in markers of protein fermentation. When compared with normal lactobacilli populations in the dGIT, generation of an DL population would result in increased manure odor emissions from pigs offered both dietary CP concentrations. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was conducted to investigate the effect of including chitosan [0 (positive control) vs. 20 g/kg of feed] and high or low dietary CP concentration (200 vs. 150 g/kg of feed) on nutrient digestibility, N utilization, selected bacterial populations, and metabolite composition of the dGIT and manure emissions from finisher pigs (60.3 kg). Consumption of chitosan had no influence (P > 0.05) on nutrient digestibility or N utilization. In both high- and low-CP diets, consumption of chitosan decreased the lactobacilli-to-Enterobacteriaceae ratio (P < 0.01), generating an DL population, and increased pH (P < 0.01) in the dGIT and ammonia (P = 0.02) in the cecum compared with diets that supported normal lactobacilli populations. Consumption of chitosan decreased molar proportions of butyric acid (P < 0.01) and increased valeric acid (P < 0.01) in the dGIT compared with unsupplemented diets. Furthermore, consumption of chitosan increased manure odor emissions (P = 0.05) compared with unsupplemented diets. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of chitosan consumption on manure ammonia emissions from 0 to 240 h. The current study demonstrates that dietary chitosan suppressed populations of lactobacilli in the dGIT. In response, a considerable increase in Enterobacteriaceae, markers of protein fermentation, and manure odor emissions was observed compared with the positive control diet. These effects were observed in pigs offered both high-and low-CP diets. The current study indicates a possible role for lactic-acid bacteria in modulating manure odor emissions relatively independent of the proportions of dietary CP available for fermentation in the dGIT.

It was hypothesized that supplementation of an oat-extracted mixed-linkage (1 → 3), (1 → 4)-ß-d-glucan (ß-glucans) to a wheat-based diet may beneficially mitigate manure odor and ammonia emissions associated with intensive pig production, without depressing nutrient digestibility as has been observed with oat-based diets. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary ß-glucan source and the inclusion of an enzyme composite containing ß-glucanase on energy and nutrient digestibility, N utilization, distal gastrointestinal tract (GIT) fermentation, and manure emissions from finisher boars. Twenty-eight boars (BW = 74.2 ± 3.6 kg) were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (n = 7/treatment): 1) an oat-based diet (oat), 2) an oat diet + enzyme composite (OE), 3) a wheat-based diet + purified ß-glucans (WG), and 4) a wheat-based diet + purified ß-glucans + enzyme composite. The wheat-based diets containing purified ß-glucans were formulated to contain concentrations of total ß-glucans comparable with the oat-based diet. Consumption of the WG diet resulted in a greater digestibility of GE (P = 0.001) and an increase in the urine:feces N excretion ratio (P = 0.049) compared with the oat diet. In the distal GIT, pigs offered the WG diet contained fewer bifidobacteria (P = 0.027) and lactobacilli (P = 0.050) compared with the oat diet. Pigs offered the WG diet had increased manure odor emissions compared with the oat diet (P = 0.023). In conclusion, although supplementing wheat-based diets with extracted oat-ß-glucan did not reduce nutrient digestibility, there was a negligible effect in beneficially influencing manure emissions from pigs when compared with a conventional oat formulation.

The objective of the current experiment was to evaluate the influence of dietary cereal sources of beta(1,3)(1,4)-d-glucan (beta-glucan) and enzyme supplementation on indices of environmental pollution from finisher pigs. An experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was initiated to investigate the effect of dietary source of beta-glucan (barley vs. oats) and enzyme supplementation (no vs. yes) on nutrient digestibility, N utilization, intestinal fermentation, and manure odor and ammonia emissions from finisher boars (n = 4; BW = 73.9 kg; SD = 4.7). Sixteen boars were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (n = 4/treatment): 1) barley-based diet, 2) barley-based diet + exogenous enzyme, 3) oat-based diet, and 4) oat-based diet + enzyme. The enzyme supplement used contained endo-1,3(4)-beta-glucanase and endo-1,4-beta-xylanase. Experimental diets were formulated to contain similar concentrations of DE (13.5 MJ/kg) and digestible lysine (8.8 g/kg). Pigs offered oat-based diets had reduced digestibility of DM (0.795 vs. 0.849; SEM 0.007; P = 0.001), OM (0.808 vs. 0.865; SEM 0.007; P = 0.001), GE (0.806 vs. 0.845; SEM 0.006; P = 0.002), and NDF (0.233 vs. 0.423; SEM 0.033; P < 0.003) compared with those offered barley-based diets. Oat-based diets increased populations of Bifidobacterium spp. (7.26 vs. 6.38 log cfu/g of digesta; SEM 0.201; P = 0.005) and Lactobacillus spp. (6.99 vs. 6.18 log cfu/g of digesta; SEM 0.234; P = 0.022) in the proximal colon and decreased manure odor emissions [2,179.6 vs. 4,984.6 Ou(E)/m(3) (where Ou(E) refers to European odor units); SEM 653.7; P < 0.011] compared with barley-based diets. There was an interaction between cereal type and enzyme inclusion on manure ammonia emissions from 0 to 96 h (P = 0.050). Pigs offered barley-based diets containing an enzyme supplement had increased manure ammonia emissions compared with those offered unsupplemented barley-based diets. However, there was no effect of enzyme inclusion on oat-based diets. In conclusion, pigs offered oat-based diets harbored increased Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. populations in the proximal colon and had decreased manure odor emissions compared with those offered barley-based diets. Enzyme inclusion had no effect on manure ammonia emissions from pigs offered oat-based diets.

An experiment (3 × 4 factorial arrangement) was conducted to investigate the interaction between different levels of lactose (60 v. 150 v. 250 g/kg) and seaweed extract (0 v. 1 v. 2 v. 4 g/kg) containing both laminarin and fucoidan derived from Laminaria spp. on growth performance and nutrient digestibility of weanling pigs. In all, 384 piglets (24 days of age, 7.5 kg (s.d. 1 kg) live weight) were blocked on the basis of live weight and were assigned to one of 12 dietary treatments (eight replicates per treatment). Piglets were offered diets containing either low (60 g/kg), medium (150 g/kg) or high (250 g/kg) lactose levels with one of the following levels of seaweed extract additive: (1) 0 g/kg, (2) 1 g/kg, (3) 2 g/kg or (4) 4 g/kg seaweed extract. The pigs were offered the diets ad libitum for 21 days post weaning. There was a significant lactose × seaweed extract interaction (P < 0.05) in average daily gain (ADG) during the experimental period (days 0 to 21). At the low and medium levels of lactose, there was an increase in ADG as the level of seaweed extract increased to 2 g/kg (P < 0.05). However, at the high level of lactose there was no further response in ADG as the level of seaweed extract increased above 1 g/kg. There was a significant lactose × seaweed extract interaction during the experimental period (days 0 to 21) (P < 0.05) on the food conversion ratio (FCR). At the low level of lactose, there was a significant improvement in FCR as the levels of seaweed extract increased to 4 g/kg (P < 0.01). At the medium level of lactose, there was a significant improvement in FCR as seaweed extract increased to 2 g/kg. However, there was no significant effect of seaweed extract on FCR at the high levels of lactose (P > 0.05). There was a linear increase in average daily feed intake (ADFI) during the experimental period (days 0 to 21) (P < 0.05) as levels of seaweed extract increased. There was a linear increase in ash digestibility (P < 0.01) during the experimental period (days 0 to 21) as the level of lactose increased. There was a quadratic decrease (P < 0.01) in nitrogen (N) and neutral detergent fibre digestibility as the levels of lactose increased. In conclusion, pigs responded differently to the inclusion levels of seaweed extract at each level of lactose supplementation. The inclusion of a laminarin-fucoidan extract in piglet diets may alleviate the use for high-lactose diets (>60 g/kg) and would also alleviate some of the common problems that occur post weaning.

A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted to investigate the interaction between high and low dietary crude protein (CP) (200 v. 150 g/kg) and sugar-beet pulp (SBP) (200 v. 0 g/kg) on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen (N) excretion, intestinal fermentation and manure ammonia and odour emissions from 24 boars (n = 6, 74.0 kg live weight). The diets were formulated to contain similar concentrations of digestible energy (13.6 MJ/kg) and lysine (10.0 g/kg). Pigs offered SBP-containing diets had a reduced (P < 0.05) digestibility of dry matter, ash, N, gross energy and an increased (P < 0.001) digestibility of neutral-detergent fibre compared with pigs offered diets containing no SBP. There was an interaction between CP and SBP on urinary N excretion and the urine : faeces N ratio. Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP SBP-based diet had reduced urine : faeces N ratio (P < 0.05) and urinary N excretion (P < 0.05) compared with those offered the 200 g/kg CP diet without SBP. However, there was no effect of SBP in pigs offered 150 g/kg CP diets. Manure ammonia emissions were reduced by 33% from 0 to 240 h (P < 0.01); however, odour emissions were increased by 41% (P < 0.05) when pigs were offered SBP diets. Decreasing dietary CP to 150 g/kg reduced total N excretion (P < 0.001) and ammonia emissions from 0 to 240 h (P < 0.05). There was an interaction between dietary CP and SBP on branched-chain fatty acids (P < 0.001) in caecal digesta. Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP SBP-containing diet reduced branched-chain fatty acids in the caecum compared with pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP diet containing no SBP. However, there was no effect of SBP in the 150 g/kg CP diet. In conclusion, pigs offered SBP-containing diets had a reduced manure ammonia emissions and increased odour emissions compared with diets containing no SBP. Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP SBP-containing diet had a reduced urine : faeces N ratio and urinary N excretion compared with those offered the 200 g/kg CP diet containing no SBP.

An experiment (complete randomised design) was conducted to investigate the linear and quadratic effects of barley ß-glucan inclusion level on total tract nutrient apparent digestibility, nitrogen excretion, intestinal microflora, volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile and manure ammonia emissions in pigs. Twenty-four boars (66 kg) were assigned to one of four treatments: (T1) 0 g/kg barley (control diet) (5.6 g/kg ß-glucan), (T2) 222 g/kg barley (12.1 g/kg ß-glucan), (T3) 444 g/kg barley (18.9 g/kg ß-glucan) and (T4) 666 g/kg barley (25 g/kg ß-glucan). Barley was substituted for wheat in the diet. The diets were formulated to contain similar concentrations of digestible energy and digestible lysine. There was a linear decrease (P < 0.001) in the total tract apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, gross energy and neutral-detergent fibre with increasing ß-glucan concentration. Faecal nitrogen excretion was affected by dietary ß-glucan concentration (quadratic P < 0.05). There was a linear decrease in Enterobacteria concentrations (P < 0.05) with increasing dietary ß-glucan concentration. Increasing dietary barley levels caused a linear decrease in colonic (P < 0.01) and caecal pH (P < 0.001). Total caecal VFA and propionic acid were affected by dietary ß-glucan concentration (quadratic, P < 0.05). There was a linear decrease in the proportion of acetic acid (P < 0.001), isobutyric acid (P < 0.01) and isovaleric acid (P < 0.05) with increasing levels of dietary barley in both the caecum and colon. There was a linear increase in the proportion of propionic acid (P < 0.001) and butyric acid (P < 0.05) with increasing barley in the colon. In conclusion, high level of dietary ß-glucan (25 g/kg) is required to reduce offensive odour forming branched-chain VFAs; however, diet digestibility is compromised at such levels.

A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was performed to investigate the interaction between a high- and low-crude-protein (CP) diet (200 v. 140 g/kg) and inulin supplementation (0 v. 12.5 g/kg) on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen (N) excretion, intestinal microflora, volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and manure ammonia emissions from 24 boars (n = 6, 74.0 kg live weight). The diets were formulated to contain similar concentrations of digestible energy and lysine. Pigs offered the high-CP diets had a higher excretion of urinary N (P < 0.001), faecal N (P < 0.01) and total N (P < 0.001) than the pigs offered the low-CP diets. Inulin supplementation increased faecal N excretion (P < 0.05) and decreased the urine N : faeces N ratio (P < 0.05) compared with the inulin-free diets. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of dietary treatment on N retention. There was an interaction (P < 0.05) between dietary CP concentration and inulin supplementation on caecal Enterobacteria spp. Pigs offered the diet containing 200 g/kg of CP plus inulin decreased the population of Enterobacteria spp. compared to those with the inulin-supplemented 140 g/kg CP diet. However, CP level had no significant effect on the population of Enterobacteria spp. in the unsupplemented diets. Inulin supplementation increased caecal Bifidobacteria (P < 0.01) compared with the inulin-free diets. There was no effect of inulin supplementation on VFA concentration or intestinal pH (P > 0.05). Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP diets had higher (P < 0.05) manure ammonia emissions from 0 to 240 h of storage than pigs offered the 140 g/kg CP. In conclusion, inulin supplementation resulted in an increase in Bifidobacteria concentration and a reduction in Enterobacteria spp. at the high CP level indicating that inulin has the ability to beneficially manipulate gut microflora in a proteolytic environment.

OBJECTIVE: To assess doctors' and nurses' views on the presence of relatives in the resuscitation room during cardiac arrest or major trauma. DESIGN: Questionnaires were sent to accident and emergency (A&E) nurses and doctors of all disciplines in a London teaching hospital. Recipients were asked if they would favour the presence of selected relatives in the resuscitation room and to give comments. RESULTS: 103 questionnaires were distributed and 81 returned, a response rate of 78.6%; 33% were senior house officers, 29% consultants, 16% senior registrars/registrars, 12% A&E nurses, and 10% house officers. Of the respondents, 63% were not in favour of relatives being present, and 37% were in favour. The likelihood of being in favour of allowing relatives to be present was high among A&E nurses; among doctors it increased with rising seniority. Most respondents felt that more resuscitation training would be necessary, in addition to counselling for staff and relatives. CONCLUSIONS: Staff with the least experience in dealing with resuscitations and distressed relatives were likely to be opposed to relatives being present in the resuscitation room. As there is evidence that the bereavement process is eased if a partner/relative witnesses the resuscitation, relatives should be offered the opportunity to witness resuscitation if staff training is geared towards the presence of relatives. ALS/ATLS training for all hospital doctors and nurses should include the management of distressed relatives observing a resuscitation.
